Shelley Duvall, the actress best known for her roles in "The Shining" and several acclaimed Robert Altman films, has died at the age of 73, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Duvall was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 7, 1949, and grew up around Houston. Her father, Robert, was a cattle auctioneer turned attorney.

Duvall's career began in the early 1970s with a series of small roles in films and television shows. Her breakout role came in Altman's "3 Women," for which she won a Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Duvall went on to star in a number of Altman's films, including "MASH," "McCabe & Mrs. Miller," and "Nashville." She also had notable roles in "The Shining," "Popeye," and "Roxanne."

Duvall retired from acting in the late 1990s and lived a private life in Texas. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.
