Prehistoric Life: The Extinct Tyrannosaurus Rex

Dinosaurs: Apex Predators of the Past

The Tyrannosaurus Rex (T. Rex) was a massive theropod dinosaur that roamed the Earth during the Cretaceous period, approximately 68 million years ago. This fearsome predator was one of the largest land animals to have ever existed, reaching lengths of up to 40 feet and weighing an estimated 15 tons.

Extinction of the T. Rex

The T. Rex became extinct along with other non-avian dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, in an event known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. Scientists believe that this extinction was caused by a combination of factors, including a massive asteroid impact and volcanic eruptions.

Nocturnal Behavior

Recent research suggests that the T. Rex may have been nocturnal, or active at night. This theory is based on the discovery of fossilized T. Rex teeth that show signs of wear patterns typically associated with nocturnal predators.
